Abstract
Acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) resin is a type of thermoplastic engineering plastic, which is polymerized by over 50% of styrene, proper amount of butadiene and acrylonitrile. It has gloss, electrical property and processing ease provided by styrene, toughness and low-temperature impact resistance provided by butadiene, and weather resistance, heat resistance and chemical resistance provided by acrylonitrile. It has been widely used in automobiles, home electrical appliances, communication instruments, and commodities, etc.

The global capacity of ABS was 6.26 million tons in 2002, the production was 4.85 million tons, and the consumption was 4.83 million tons, where Middle East had the highest increasing rate of capacity which was 51.6% from 2002 to 2007. By 2007, the global capacity of ABS will reach 7.09 million tons and the demand will be up to 5.86 million tons. In terms of consumption structure, main applications of ABS abroad are in electronic and electrical appliances, automobile parts, office machines, pipe materials and parts, etc, with a consumption proportion of 51%, 10%, 5% and 3%, respectively. As for domestic consumption structure of ABS, the major fields are still blown, cast and diaphragm products.

ABS developed rapidly in our country and the capacity increased greatly in the past few years. In 2002, the capacity was 790 thousand tons, the production was 520 thousand tons, and the self-supporting rate rapidly increased from 1.5% in 1997 to 24% in 2002. However, the demand from the market still can't be met and a large amount of import is needed to make it up. The consumption structure of ABS in our country is dominated by electronic and electrical appliances which account for 76.6%. The second largest is light industry products which account for 17.9%. It is estimated that by 2005, the consumption in electronic and electrical appliances will decrease a little bit, while the consumption proportion in automobiles and light industry products will increase slightly.

In 2002, due to the price rise of crude oil, ABS resin was taken out of the downturn in 2001 and the price began looking up with 15% higher in the fourth quarter than the first quarter.
