Abstract
Polystyrene (PS) maybe divided into general purpose PS (GPPS), high-impact-resistant PS (HIPS) and expanded PS (EPS). GPPS is a range of translucent crystalloid under various molecular weights. HIPS usually contains 5 percent elastomer to enhance impact strength. Produced by polystyrene and physical foaming agent (usually pentane), EPS can be used for producing such products as drinking cups, fast food boxes and insulated packing.

In 2002, the global production capacity of polystyrene (PS) was 17.19 million tons, global output amounted to 13.93 million tons and global consumption reached 14.13 million tons. Currently, Asia, Europe and North America are key PS production areas in the world. However, the global consumption is largely even among all the regions, and trade activities are mostly interregional. Asia will be the major area seeing capacity increase over the next few years. As a result, the surplus in Asia is expected to expand. By 2006, the global PS capacity will reach 18.68 million tons and demand will top 16.66 million tons. In terms of global consumption structure, major use of PS will remain in the areas of electronics and electric appliances, blister-packs, and construction materials.

China's PS sector has seen rapid growth over the recent years with a significant increase in capacity. However, a remarkable pickup in demand has prevented rapid growth in the country's self-sufficient rate of PS supply. Currently, only 52.5 percent of total consumption is domestically supplied with the remainder being met by imports. In a closer look at domestic consumption, EPS is mostly used in packing materials, which account for 76.8 percent of the overall EPS consumption, followed by construction insulation materials; GPPS and HIPS are mainly applied in electronics, electric appliances and convenience goods, which account for 58.0 percent and 29.4 percent of their respective consumption in China in 2002. It is expected that by 2005, this consumption structure will largely remain unchanged.
In 2002, domestic PS prices, impacted by the movement of international market prices, experienced remarkable fluctuations. In addition, China's WTO accession has boosted the output and exports of home appliances such as television sets, sharply raising domestic demand for PS. This trend is expected to remain unchanged over the next few years as foreign home appliance producers transfer their production facilities consecutively to China.
