Abstract
PP resin is fastest
growing thermal shaping resin, at present, the output of PP has
surpassed both of polyethylene and PVC.
The major application of PP worldwide is making injection molding
items, of which the turnover boxes used in freight transportation
is the main usage; Owning to the low density and good mechanical
property, PP are widely used in automobile parts & components
making. Besides, a significant proportion of PP is consumed in fiber
and film processing.
In 2001, the world PP consumption reached about 31.29 million tons.
China is the world second largest PP consumption country.
By the end of 2002, China had about 70 PP producers, and possessed
total production capacity of 3.89 million tons, of which 3.08 million
tons of capacity consisted of 32 sets of continuous PP facilities,
and 0.81 million tons existed in 106 sets of small batch-type mass
facilities. The PP capacity of both Shanghai Petrochemical Co and
Yangzi Petrochemical Co reached 0.4 million tons, the largest PP
production capacity possessed by single enterprise in China.
In China, the largest PP consumption sector is the woven products
including woven bags, baling bags and ropes, etc., taking 50%~60%
of the national total. The other major application sector of PP
is the field of film, accounted for 15% of the national total PP
consumption, of which BOPP hold a dominant position.
China is one of the world largest PP import country, because domestic
PP facilities can't meet the market demand. In 2002, the domestic
PP consumption was about 6.171 million tons, while PP output merely
reached 3.742 million tons. However the self-sufficient rate of
PP increased to 60.6% in 2002 from 49.2% in 1995, thanks to newly
launched PP facilities in China in past a few years.
There will be several new PP facilities put into operation in China
from 2003 to 2005. It is predicted that China PP production capacity
will increase to 5.4 million tons in 2005, and will top 12.8 million
tons in 2010, meanwhile the PP consumption will also reach 8.4 million
tons in 2005.

10. Competitive Analysis of China PP Industry
10.1. Size of facilities is on the low side, and energy & material
consumption is obviously higher than international advanced level.
10.2. Production cost maintained at high level and the product quality
is unstable, which much influence the competitive edge.
10.3. Proportion of high-grade varieties is obviously lower than
international level, in addition to the singularity of models.
10.4. Development level of catalyzer and technology is obviously
lower than international level.
10.5. The industry is backward in processing application study and
weak in technical service forces.
